The Canoe

Lewis Rushing, President of Penn Properties, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama, commissioned Dean to do a painting inspired by one of his poems, “The Canoe.”  Fluid and deeply peaceful, the painting now hangs in the wing that Rushing built for the university. 

 

So many years ago the sky was just as blue

​

Many trials and tribulations have drifted through the clouds ever changing as life itself

​

The distant light shines through the trees that used to be so present  

​

Calm serenity gets closer as smooth reflections lay down across the lake

​

Water slowly filling the canoe will not even leave a ripple when it sinks
